Day I Day II Day III

DAY I -- (Friday, May 9, 2014)

9:00 - 9:30 - The Writer Within

Who Are You? What Do You Want To Write? Why? Strategies. Objectives. Elements of Fiction/Non-Fiction. What to Expect.

9:30 - 10:30 - Unlock The Door To Your Story

Where do you begin? What is the point, the place and the time of entry? How will you frame your story and what is the key to luring readers in? And then! How will you engage--amuse, entertain, delight, captivate--and make your readers Stay!

In this Session: Create openings and portals to your story that will take your readers to a place they’ve never been.

10:30 - 10:45 - Take a Break

10:45 - 11:45 - Who’s That Knocking On The Door?

Meet the people who populate your story. Before readers arrive, characters--the angelic to the eccentric (and their rich or rowdy friends)--will clamor to get in and be part of the drama, action and romance. Be forewarned: creating a major character is major work. Who are your characters? Will they be complex, exotic, unconventional or troublesome enough to move your story forward? Yes, they will! You’ll make them so. Or out they go.

In this Session: Complete character development exercises to flesh out engaging and memorable people (and animals) who come to life on the page. Find their flaws, strengths and weaknesses, their habits and most of all, their true character.

11:45 - 12:30 - Is It Time For Lunch?

12:30 - 1:30 - See Strange and Wonderful Sights

Drawing--even if you do it badly--is a valuable thing for a writer to do. A drawing or sketch releases creativity, sharpens consciousness and brings depth and dimension to images and to whatever is locked in your mind.

In this Session: Through drawing, your mind and eyes become mirrors and windows for strange and wonderful sights, fantasies, illusions, memories, visions, realities.... This is window peeking at its best.

1:30 - 2:30 - Go To The Bank

Ideas and concepts parade through your mind (and keep you awake at night). But where do you find thousands and thousands of words to tell your story?

In this Session: Learn to make deposits in your word bank. Build up an account and make withdrawals to enrich your work and get the job done.

2:30 - 3:30 - Write Here! Right Now!

Releasing your creativity is like opening Pandora’s Box--all kinds of horribleness jumps out... but hope jumps out, too. For one hour, you’ll write non-stop and be surprised, amazed and dazzled at what leaps onto the page. Don’t fret if you see a little horribleness. You’ll fix it with writing tools and techniques.

3:30 - 3:45 - Tea & Sympathy

This is your well-deserved Schmooze Session. If the weather is as wonderful as we think it’ll be, refreshments will be served poolside or in the breezy courtyard. Tea for you. Sympathy for all... because we know. Writing is anything but easy.

3:45 - 4:45 - Let’s Hear It!

Read your work aloud in this one-hour workshop. Everyone will get an audience so we’ll stretch this hour beyond one hour, if we need to.

4:45 - 5:00 - Excuse Proof Writing

There’s no such thing as writer’s block. Learn to write your way past an empty page and create fresh new work for Day II. Does that mean you’ll write and rewrite tonight? Yes, you’ll write and rewrite tonight.

Before you go... our Artist-in-Residence will give tips on Creative Visualization: The Art of Writing >

Sessions Are Conducted In English (un poco Espanol)
Sessions Are No Cell Phone Zones
Sessions Are Best Suited for Beginning to Intermediate Writers of All Ages
(Advanced Writers Are Also Welcome)

DAY II -- (Saturday, May 10, 2014)

9:00 - 10:30 - Let’s Hear It!

What did you write last night? Read aloud to see and hear changes you made in service to your reader and your story.

In this Session: You and the group will analyze your rewrite and be surprised at the progress you made--overnight!

10:30 - 10:45 - Take A Break

10:45 - 11:00 - Turn Up The Heat

When, if ever, should you write steamy love scenes? What lines should you cross (or not cross) when writing about human relationships? Would you... should you... could you... write sexy scenes or build tension by practicing restraint?

In this Session: Consider when, where and how to write about intimate relationships, if you dare. Whether explicit or subtle, you’ll learn to decide how far your characters will (or will not) go.

11:00 - 11:45 - Draw The Curtain

Close the curtain and peek behind it to envision the setting for a love scene. Where will your characters take your readers? To the bedroom? The beach? A park bench or the back seat of a car? Or will they simply see an enchanting stranger across a crowded room?

In this Session: Stretch your imagination and sketch out a backdrop for romance--or for love in an unlikely place.

11:45 - 12:30 - Lunch

A true piece of writing is therapeutic and personally satisfying. But let’s get down to business--the business of writing. Can you sell what you tell?

12:30 - 3:30 - Get Down To Business

The writer’s life is as challenging, creative, glamorous, rewarding and meaningful as you imagine it to be. It is intense. It is fun. And it doesn’t come easily. Oh, the drama! Oh, the romance! And oh, the reality!

In this Session: Successful writers and editors talk about how to script a future as a freelance writer, author and illustrator... how to separate facts from fiction... and how to make a living when living a creative lifestyle.

Sessions Include: Freelancing For Fun & Profit + Breaking Into Magazines + Books & Blogs + Adding Art to Your Work.

3:30 - Stick Around Awhile

Stay for cheese & fruit & cold beverages & socializing.

Sit for a few minutes and Artist-In-Residence Carla will sketch a caricature of you. Take it home as a souvenir--along with a creative toolkit and warm memories.

Put the final polish on your pages and submit them for awards and applause!
